BAVARIAN JIGSAWS 1999
I arrive in Bavaria on new years eve 1998 .... my husband is artist in residence in the fabulous Villa Waldberta, while I look after our three kids, 6 years, 3 years and 3 months old in a cowshed down the road . I had imagined taking a little maternity leave, but am immediately fascinated by the resemblance of Tolzer Land to a 2000 piece Bavarian Jigsaw, and haunted by the sinister fairy stories I was obsessed with as a child set in the forests that surround us.....

The Empress of Austria back in Bavaria, remembers her time fox hunting in Ireland, her corsets laced so tight she often fainted and fell from her horse, but one must suffer for ones beauty.... Behind her Ludwigs fantasy castle Neuswannstein which became the model for the Disney castle and bankrupted the kingdom of Bavaria.....

Lola Montes
Lola Montes, extreme advenuress having fled London and Paris arrives in California for the Sacramento gold rush. She writes a play about her life starring of course herself, and collects a menagerie around her, including a dancing bear.....

Bad Hair Day
Sissy, princess of Bavaria, became the Empress of Austria, but loved to disguise herself in local costume and sing in the taverns. I imagine her the morning after in front of her beloved cousin Ludwig's castle Neuswannstein.

The Wolpertinger
Early Baavarian surrealism, on dark winter nights in the forest the local hunters create Wolpertingers, fusion species, horned rabbits with wings. The household chimeras are sold to tourists and society ladies to place of their mantlepieces.

Bavarian Beer
You are also allowed to drink the beer without a goat in your arms. I had three children in my arms in the bierkellers of Bavaira

Two society ladies adopt an adorable Wolpertinger iat a Christmas market in Bavaria

Escaping a violent military husband serving in India, Eliza Gilbert returns to Europe as Lola Montes, an impoverished Spanish noblewoamn forced to dance for her supper....

A triumphant Lola Montes performs the Spider Dance in Munich, attracting the attention of the king, which will not end well for either of them.....

It seemed a shame to take Sissy away from the chateau, she seemed so happy there

Bavarian Jigsaws exhibition at the Chateau de Sacy in Picardie, where my friend Hermine Demoriane runs an art foundation, the regal atmossphere and torn silk wallpaper are the perfect setting....
